There’s a line I think about whenever a bride is overthinking her wedding hairstyle: simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Sometimes the simple choice is the right one, and Lily was proof. A New York City girl herself, from upper Manhattan, she got married at The Frick Collection, an art museum in New York City. The venue is elegant and classic, and Lily matched it beautifully. We handled her New York City wedding hair and makeup, and the whole look leaned into that same quiet, refined feel.
The Hair Trial
When Lily and I first talked, she described her style as classic, nothing loud or over the top. She knew she wanted her hair up but was torn between something relaxed and something more polished. At her trial she went with the more refined option to match her gown and the venue, and once she saw the ballerina-style bun, she knew. It made her feel sophisticated and like herself.
Getting Ready in NYC
The Frick Collection is a museum, so there’s no getting ready room. Lily and her bridesmaids got ready at her apartment on the Upper East Side instead. Getting ready at home has its trade-offs, and in New York City you always have to plan around traffic. Still, being home kept her relaxed until it was time to head to the venue.
Tip: If your venue doesn’t have a getting ready room or much space, book a hotel nearby so everyone is comfortable and not on top of each other.
Getting ready at home also meant Lily could do portraits in the great light of her apartment before heading over to marry her groom, Stephen.
A Note on Bridal Style
One of the most requested directions for 2025 is refined, understated hair and makeup. A lot of the looks brides are asking for nod to Old Hollywood, classic and unfussy, showing off the style of the wedding without taking over.
My advice is to pick a hairstyle that makes you feel like you. If you usually wear your hair down, wear it down. If you usually wear it up, do that. Your focus on the day should be having a great time, not worrying about your look.
