Wedding Hair and Makeup for a Large Bridal Party: How to Make the Morning Run on Time

Posted in: Tips & Tricks

The short answer: one artist can comfortably complete five to six services in a wedding morning. If your party needs more than that, say, a bride plus eight bridesmaids and two moms, you need multiple artists working in parallel, or someone is getting rushed, started at 4 a.m., or finished late. Most large parties need three to four artists; that’s the math, and it’s the single most common thing couples underestimate.

The Artist Math

Hair or makeup takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes per person per service, and the bride deserves 120 to 150 minutes for her combined look, plus final touches timed to photos. So a party of ten getting both services is roughly 14+ artist-hours of work. One artist can’t deliver that before a 4 p.m. ceremony. Four artists can do it in a relaxed five-hour morning with time for mimosas and photographs of the getting-ready you actually want to remember.

A Real Example: Twelve Services, Four Artists

At Anna and Dan’s Villa Royale wedding in Palm Springs, we coordinated hair and makeup for the bride and eight guests, both moms’ services, and the officiant’s hair, with four artists on-site. Every service finished calm and on schedule, with the bride’s final touches timed to her photographer’s first-look window. That’s what the right artist count buys you: a morning that feels like a celebration instead of an assembly line.

Sample Timeline: Party of 10, 4 p.m. Ceremony

Time What’s Happening
9:00 a.m. Three artists begin with bridesmaids; bride’s skin prep
11:30 a.m. Bride’s hair begins; moms’ services slotted in
1:00 p.m. Bride’s makeup; remaining party finishes
2:15 p.m. Bride dressed; touch-ups and photos
2:45 p.m. First look, on time, nobody rushed

What It Costs

With Elwynn + Cass, large parties don’t change the per-person rate: brides are $525 ($675 in Northern California) and party members are $300 ($385 in Northern California) per person for hair and makeup, additional artists are how we protect your timeline, not a surcharge surprise. See the full math in our California cost guide or our Colorado cost guide.

For Planners

Large-party beauty is where wedding mornings are won or lost, and coordinating four freelance artists yourself is a second job. We staff, schedule, and run the beauty timeline as one vendor with one contract. Here’s how partnering with us works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many artists do I need for 8 bridesmaids? A bride plus eight getting both services is about 14+ artist-hours, plan on three to four artists for a standard morning.

Can one artist do a party of 10? Not before an afternoon ceremony without starting before dawn. The artist math is unforgiving, parallel artists are the answer.

Does a bigger party need to book earlier? Yes, multi-artist dates are the first to fill. Most large parties book 9 to 12 months ahead.
