I Like Big Matcha And I Cannot Lie…
Am I basic if I think matcha lattes are the new PSL? Even if it does, I don’t care, I’m still going to drink them. Every. Damn. Day. I’ve never been much of a coffee drinker (tried it once growing up, and hated it), so I switched to tea. I don’t discriminate against tea, I love all of them, but we all have our favorites. Mine happens to be matcha.
What The Hell Is Matcha?
If you follow Elwynn + Cass on Instagram, you see I post about matcha a lot. It’s part of my morning ritual to start my day off right, and if I don’t have it, well… I feel off. Creature of habit clearly. Though if you’ve never had it and you see me posting this frothy green drink, you are probably wondering what sort of witches brew am I drinking. Well kind sir or madam, let me tell you.
Matcha is a concentrated form of green tea that has been around for centuries. It has twice the caffeine of traditional green tea and is traditionally made with the matcha powder (not those crappy tea bag versions), just below boiling water, and a bamboo whisk. It is whisked to become frothy and then you are supposed to drink it relatively quickly. Don’t guzzle it, that would still burn even if your water isn’t that hot, but do drink it before it gets cold.
Why You Should Drink It
I first came across matcha because I am a tea addict and love trying new things. Oh and since green tea has been known to boost metabolism, I figured a more concentrated version should double that right? Though more so of the reason I started drinking it, was that it gives me a calm alertness. Not the jitters like coffee can, but an alertness that I can literally bang out 3 hours of work in an hour and a half. It’s legit.
Plus it has a litany of health benefits. It’s high in antioxidants, which we know are great for your beauty routine and maintaining good skin. It fights free radicals and keep your immune system healthy, so you instead of fretting about all these vitamins and such, matcha can kill multiple birds with one stone.
Making Matcha At Home
I make my own version of a matcha latte at home, because 1) I wake up super early (6:00/6:30am) and 2) I like mine unsweetened. So if you want to try making your own at home, here’s my little hack to get it super frothy (and not use a traditional bamboo whisk).
I use a blender (blasphemy for all you traditionalists out there). I pour a little bit of almond milk (like a Tbsp) into the blender. Then add in the tsp of matcha powder to it. I boil some water in my tea kettle until just below boiling (when steam comes out, but it’s not whistling) then pour it into the blender. I blend this up for about 5 seconds and voila, your own matcha latte at home.
