Eat Your Way Pretty: Foods To Keep Your Skin Healthy AF During Winter
Winter is here and mother nature doesn’t know what to do with itself. One day it’s hot and shorts are on the agenda, and the next day it’s cold and a sweater isn’t enough. It’s hard enough trying to figure out what to wear, and if you are anything like me, the changes in temperature just make it that much harder on my skin. I am terrible at moisturizing. No honestly, like I only ever moisture my body after I shave. I’m that bad. So you can bet that my skin can get pretty bad during the winter. However, I have figured out a way to keep it healthy, without too much effort.
Eat your way pretty with beauty foods
The lazy girl’s guide to healthy skin? Eat beauty foods. The foods that help your skin from the inside out, so when you don’t have time (or are just lazy) don’t have to resort to topical measures.
Disclaimer: You should still moisturize. That is good for your skin, I am just forgetful.
Load up on fats
Fat does not make you fat, just going to lay that out there. Greasy foods and sugar do. You are what you eat, so if you eat greasy foods and load up on sugar, your skin will show it. I promise you. My skin is so in tune with my diet, that when I eat french fries, or milkshakes (though I love them), I almost immediately break out. Does anyone else have this happen to them?
The contrast is when I eat lots of healthy fats my skin glows. Seriously, I am not joking. My acne clears up and my skin feels soft and elastic.
Healthy fat foods: avocados, flaxseeds, salmon, nuts, etc.
Eating a diet right in colorful, bright foods is the fastest way to eat your way pretty. Foods high in Vitamin-C and Vitamin-A increase cell-turnover and protects the integrity of your skin. Also, antioxidant-rich foods, like blueberries can reduce free radicals (think wrinkle-causing), so you want to load up on them.
Plus you can plan these foods based on the season. For example, sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamin-A and are plentiful during the winter. Cook one up, put some almond butter or avocado on it and you are golden. Your skin will be prettier by the time you are done eating it.
Examples include blueberries (reduce free radicals), red bell peppers (Vitamin-C), sweet potatoes (Vitamin-A), and onions (protect against wrinkles), leafy green vegetables (Vitamin-C & Vitamin-A).
Anti-inflammatory for the win
Anything that reduces inflammation is going to do wonders for your skin. When you are inflamed internally your skin (and body shows it) unfortunately. If you have ever been bloated, or achy you know what I am talking about. The best way I have found to combat inflammation is eating the above foods, as well as, incorporating in foods like turmeric and ginger. Turmeric is the king of anti-inflammatory foods and is a must-have. It especially helps after working out to reduce inflammation in your muscles.
Tip: You have to have some sort of fat (coconut oil, flaxseed, etc.) or black pepper mixed with the turmeric in order for it to be absorbed into your system. The easiest way to incorporate some would be in a smoothie, so you don’t taste it or to make golden milk.
Beauty foods hacks:
I know that seems like a lot of food to consume on a daily basis to have pretty skin, but really it’s just incorporating a little bit each day. If you don’t have for all that, you can take some in supplement form (i.e. turmeric). Otherwise, just take some of the stuff, throw it in a blender and voila, beauty foods smoothie.
Remember though, eating your way pretty is only 50% of the battle, a good skincare routine helps a lot as well. Though you don’t need a ton of products. You can check out my skincare routine products, there are only a few of them.
